Most fishing line -- the line that is stored on the reel -- that is used today is one of two types: monofilament (a single strand) or braided fishing line (with multiple strands braided or woven together). Why use braided fishing line? Primarily because it is much stronger than single-strand lines. Braided fishing lines are a great choice if you often fishing in areas with plenty of water hazards such as outcropping rocks or trees, because braided fishing line is better able to withstand wear and tear caused by lines rubbing up against hard surfaces.
One of the very best brands of braided fishing line made today goes under the name of SpiderWire. Made by Berkeley, SpiderWire stealth braided fishing line incorporates Teflon-treated microfibers which are guaranteed to give you smooth casting with no "rats nests" -- the same kind of manageability you might expect from a monofilament line, but with the added strength of a braided fishing line. You can find SpiderWire in a variety of strengths (6-pound all the way up to 80-pound) and in two colors: Moss Green and Tracer Yellow. The price range for this excellent braided fishing line is $7.69-$18.99. Highly recommended!
Another excellent brand of braided fishing line -- especially excellent for bass fisherman who spend a great deal of time bottom fishing and trolling -- is the Western Filament braided Dacron casting and trolling line. Manufactured by Western Filament, this braided fishing line is well-known for its low-stretch characteristics. This braided fishing line also uses a specially-formulated wax coating which is applied to the line in order to keep knots from slipping.
A third great product is made by Tuf Line. This brand of braided fishing line is manufactured using a special process that results in a smaller, more compact -- yet stronger -- braided fishing line. According to the company it is over 40% smaller in diameter than monofilament line, will not absorb water. A 300-yard spool of 20-pound test will set you back just under $18.
An important characteristic of better-quality braided fishing line is that it should lie compact and be able to be wound very tightly on your reel. This will allow you to load more line on your reel -- and with more braided fishing line on your reel you will be able to cast farther and troll longer distances. A braided fishing line with all of these characteristics is manufactured by PowerPro. PowerPro braided fishing line is reasonably priced -- a 300-yard spool of 20-pound test currently retails for $22.99.
Finally, if you need braided fishing line that is much stronger -- for saltwater fishing on a boat, for example -- then you should check out the Saltiga Surf line from Daiwa. This braided fishing line provides the kind of strength and extreme durability that you would expect from a line designed for saltwater and boat fishing. A spool of 70-pound test is priced at $239.

I learned my lesson the hard way about braided line. I have always used monofilament line, but after losing a huge fish last summer I switched to the stronger braided line.
